Forces Causing Movement

Soon will be learning about matter and energy.  Some of the things we will explore is how different forces such as a pull or a push, can effect movement of an object.  We will begin this unit in less than two weeks so I thought I could get you ready by suggesting something to think about.  Go to the Canada's Wonderland web site and have a look at the roller coasters and various rides.  Investigate the different kinds of rides and try to determine what forces may cause the ride to speed up, slow down, or change direction.  Also take a look at forces causing movement for a fun way to become familiar with this unit.

Strong and Stable Structure

FYI for parents: We are coming to the end of our unit on Structures and Mechanisms.  The children have learned the importance of form, function, strength, and stability in structures through time.  Strong and stable structures were also investigated to determine how their design and materials enable them to perform their load-bearing function.   Finally, students were required to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of structure, strength and stability and the factors that effect them.
It has been so fascinating learning about strong and stable structures that what better way to end this unit then to go to the CN Tower and see one of the most famous structures of all time!  Parents and students, don't forget that we are set to leave the school at 9:00am sharp on Tuesday May, 3rd.  Please arrive at 8:45 so that we have time to organize and get the children safely on to the bus. Also, please don't forget to dress your children in weather appropriate clothing and to pack a healthy lunch along with two snacks.
I have found a great link on the CN Tower.  It discusses the tower's structure and provides other interesting information.  Reading this before the visit may enhance the whole experience for the children.
I hope you find it fascinating!

Poetry Month

April is poetry month and we have been reading and writing many different types of poems.  I would like to end off this month by directing you to a few of my favorites.  The first poem is about Canada.  It is a cute poem that will help you to remember what is special about each of our provinces. The second poem is one that I feel is truthful and moving; and is very much part of my philosophy as a teacher and parent.  The final poem is about Spring and is written beautifully.
